Reflections
of truth are often revealed in the most ordinary of places for there
is magic happening all around us in the mundane objects, signs and
symbols which we regularly dance if we take the time to look and
see what is there. Observation of the obvious is fundamental
for sleuths like myself, and the study that I have found very revealing
is key chains. Like magnets on the fridge, key chains speak
volumes to me. For instance, is someone practical, sentimental,
functional, or complex? A key chain will tell you. Is a key
chain loaded with multiple keys and additional symbols or is it
a zen statement? What do our key chains reveal about us?
I had this ‘aha’
moment of blinding insight one balmy summer day as I casually examined
a keychain. Omens are everywhere! The seemingly mundane
details and objects of our lives reveal so much about ourselves.
As the saying goes, God is in the details! Here is my current
personal keychain story that is tied together with contradiction,
sentiment, kinship, dreams and magic.
Beginning from
the upper left hand corner, there is a fat blue dolphin made from
the well-known patterned fabric from Provence, France. This
is a cherished gift from a girlfriend who has a home there, and
before I even visited there, this dolphin had been hanging around
on my keychain for a couple of years. It has a nice squishy
texture to scrunch in times of stress that is strangely satisfying.
Moving clockwise
to the middle, a plastic classic aloha shirt design lies next to
a handmade puka-shell charm handmade by a surfer friend. The
plastic item was purchased at a local drugstore, and the good luck
shells were gathered, blessed and then strung on the beach. I
enjoy the contrast of these two items for one is plastic/fantastic
and one is natural. Both elements relate to my Maui-world
for the natural and the new are integrating now on Maui in these
times of expansion.
On the far
right is a wee photo album that is full of miniature snapshots of
my friends using an I-zone Polaroid camera. The pictures are
so small that everyone appears to be munchkins from the faerie world
I am delighted to browse through them in odd moments (such as standing
in a long line) as these pictures inevitably make me smile and feel
gratitude for my wonderful friends.
In the middle
is a round metal talisman that was made for me in Damanhur, Italy
using my full birth name and birthday. Damanhur is a spiritual,
intentional community in northern Italy and very magical. It has
amazing underground rooms, faculty and programs. This talisman
designed to bring good luck has strange symbols on it, rather like
sigils. I had to wait a day while they created it. After
we arrived for our visit, a huge downpour began which made the time
spent there have a surreal quality…as if this community is
not surreal enough! This talisman entered my life through
the portals of that fierce, wild storm, and thus it carries much
of that strong energy!
There is also
a miniature license plate from Monaco that I bought from a tourist
shop when I spent time there. At some moment I developed a
fantasy that I would relocate there and graduate from being a Maui
girl to a Monaco girl. The fantasy lasted a day, and then
I awoke to the joke and cast aside the spell of its ritzy appeal.
Glamour is a poor substitute for paradise. The dolphins,
the tropics, the spirit of aloha, and my family and friends are
the keys that unlock my heart. Oh, one more thing: I live
in Kihei and it sounds like Key-eh! Indeed, here are all the keys
for living the happy life.
Try the keychain
divination for yourself and see what you discover.
